Appolicious – I don’t really feel like my Internet reading needs to be more social, but the team at Scribd, the web publishing company, feels a bit differently, as evidenced by its new social reading app Float Reader, for iPhones 3GS and 4 and third- and fourth-gen iPod Touch. I’ve hit my personal limit for social networks, so it’s a good thing that Float is more than a timeline aggregator. My immediate impression of Float was that, although it still needs work, the app offers a solid concept with striking design.

Jul 11Digital Trends – Sony has already stated clearly that the plan is to launch the PlayStation Vita this year. Two big questions remain though: where and when? Popular opinion puts the initial launch in Japan, since the hardware maker’s country of origin is also where the PlayStation Portable kicked off the previous generation of handheld gaming devices. Other rumors have pointed to the United States, Europe and even a day-and-date worldwide launch for one and all. The latest hint nods across the pond to Europe, thanks to what appears to be an release date list for Blockbuster in the UK, submitted anonymously to IGN.

ContributorNetwork – There’s a glut of tablets powered by Google’s Android operating system right now, as unsold inventory piles up on store shelves and in warehouses. And while analysts like IDC have reported that Android accounts for about a third of the global tablet market, Google’s own statistics about how many devices of what kinds have been activated show that very few Android tablets are actually in use. Especially compared to the iPad, which has sold almost 30 million units so far.

ContributorNetwork – Has it been that long already? It seems like just yesterday that another clone of the iPad 2 came out, only to be received by yawns. The Asus Transformer sold out its first shipment, thanks in part to its $399 price tag, but most tablets powered by Google’s Android operating system aren’t doing so well; most of them are sitting, unsold, in warehouses and on store shelves.

ContributorNetwork – So maybe Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console doesn’t seem so hot. At least, to investors, who sunk Nintendo’s stock to a five-year-low right after it unveiled the console … OK, and to gamers, who’ve largely moved on to either the iPad or more “hardcore” consoles like the PlayStation 3.
